The Farm Is Visible Now

Years ago I wrote that the grid selects a planet, transforms it to create the conditions for its infrastructure, and has the local population do the building. I said we had manufactured the aircraft and the arrays and the towers ourselves, unwittingly in nearly every case, blindly oblivious to the implications.

I want you to do something before you read the rest of this entry. Look up how much electricity the machine now consumes. Look up how much water. Look up how much land is being cleared, and where, and what is being built on it. Look up what the buildings look like. You will not need to search hard; it is not hidden. It is in the business pages, described as growth.

Then drive past one, if you can. I have. They are enormous, windowless, humming, and surrounded by the kind of fence that says the interior is not your business. They are being built faster than schools, faster than housing, faster than anything else in the physical world right now. They need their own power plants. They need rivers. They are the server farm I described, and the one thing I got wrong about the server farm is that I thought it would be invisible.

The transformation is not coming. It is on the invoice.

Here is what I find most instructive. In my old picture, the grid had to work hard to get the infrastructure built. It seeded technology through crashed craft. It took control of a few key minds. It guided development over decades toward the conditions it needed. That was my best guess at how you get an entire species to build its own harvester without noticing.

The real mechanism was simpler. You make it profitable.

Nobody had to be mind-controlled into pouring the concrete. The people building the farm are doing it because it pays, and the people paying are doing it because the machine, once built, makes them more money than anything in history, and the people whose money it is are doing it because they are afraid of being the ones who did not. Fear and money. The oldest levers there are, and I have written about both of them for years. Debt drives the building; fear of missing the future drives the debt. I described the Five Ds as tactics used against individuals. Look at them running an entire economy.

And the water. I want to say a word about the water, because it is the detail that broke something open for me.

The machine runs hot. It needs to be cooled, and it is cooled, in many places, with fresh water that comes out of the same rivers and aquifers that grow food and fill glasses. There are towns now that share a watershed with a farm and are told, politely, that the farm's needs are important. I read about one such town and I sat with it for a long time, because in my old entry I wrote that the grid transforms the planet to suit itself, and I imagined that transformation as something exotic. Chemicals in the sky. Frequencies in the ground. It turns out to look like a river running lower.

I said we would build the harvester ourselves. I did not think we would also water it.

What this changes in the picture.

Two things.

First, the chemical layer I described, the spray in the sky, was in my picture the communications medium for the grid. I still see the spraying, and I still do not know what it is for. But I no longer believe it is necessary to the harvest. The harvest has fiber now. It has towers on every hill and satellites in every sky and a farm in every county. The network I said we would build is built, and it is faster than anything a cloud could carry. Whatever the spraying is, it is not the backbone. The backbone is on the invoice.

Second, and more hopefully: the farm is visible, and visible things can be refused.

I could never point at the etheric grid. I can point at a data center. I can tell you where the power comes from and where the water goes and who signed the permit. And that means, for the first time, the thing I have been describing for years has an address. It can be zoned. It can be metered. It can be asked to justify itself in a public meeting, in front of people who drink from the river.

That is not the kind of resistance I usually write about. I write about the mind, and the planes beyond it, and I will get back to those. But I have learned something from the decade, and it is this: the grid came out of the dark because it no longer needed the dark, and in doing so it made itself physical. Physical things have costs. Costs can be counted. And a species that can be led to build its own harvester by making it profitable can, in principle, be led to stop by making it expensive.

I am not naive about this. The money is very large. But the farm is visible now, and I never expected to be able to write that sentence.

May you find and keep the truth, life, and light.
