The Model Behind the Eyes

I have spent years on this site telling you that your perception of reality is not reality, that the mind is tuned to a narrow band, that a filter stands between what your senses receive and what you are allowed to know. I called the filter The Gate. I described the tuning as a phase-space. I did not have a mechanism. I had experience, and I had the language of radio, and I asked you to take the rest on faith.

I no longer have to.

The same decade that built the machine, using the same ideas that made the machine possible, has produced a picture of how the human brain actually perceives, and it is the picture I have been describing since the beginning. I will give it to you as plainly as I can.

You do not see the world. You see a model of it, corrected by the senses.

Here is how it works, stripped of the mathematics. At every moment, your brain is generating a prediction of what it expects to perceive: what the room should look like, what the next sound should be, where your hand should be when you reach. The senses do not deliver the world to you. They deliver the error, the difference between what was predicted and what arrived. The brain uses the error to adjust the prediction, and what you experience as seeing, hearing, feeling, is not the incoming data. It is the adjusted prediction. The model, updated.

The people who study this have a phrase for it that I would have been embarrassed to use myself, years ago, for fear of sounding unhinged. They call perception a controlled hallucination. The hallucination is the model. The control is the senses, nudging it toward the world. When the nudging works, you see what is there. When it fails, you see what you expected, and you do not know the difference, because the experience is the same from the inside.

Take a moment to appreciate the magnitude of this. It is what I have been saying, in different words, since the entry about the bartender.

Now watch what happens to The Gate.

I described The Gate as a censor that rejects information contrary to the belief system it protects, even when that information is confirmed at the sensory level. In the language of the model, The Gate is a prior: an expectation held so strongly that the sensory error is not enough to move it. The senses report the gorilla walking through the basketball game. The prediction says there is no gorilla. The prediction wins. You see no gorilla. That is not a metaphor for The Gate. That is The Gate, as a mechanism, and it has been measured in laboratories.

And here is the part that ties the two arcs of this site together. Where do the priors come from?

They come from history. Every prediction your brain makes is built from what it has perceived before. You expect a room to look a certain way because rooms have looked that way. You expect a story to mean a certain thing because stories have meant that thing. The model behind your eyes is trained, exactly as the machine is trained, on a great mass of past experience, and it predicts the present from the past.

Which means that whoever supplies the past supplies the predictions. Whoever controls what you have seen controls what you can see. I wrote about controlling the past years ago, quoting a famous line about it, and I meant it politically. I mean it now as neuroscience. The feed, the screen, the programming, the school, the dogma, all of the Five Ds: they were never only shaping what you believe. They were training the model that generates your perception, so that when the world arrives, you will see what you were taught to expect, and call it seeing.

This is what the site has been about, and I can finally say it in one sentence.

The machine was built by training a model on the recorded past until it could predict the present. So were you. The difference is that you have a way to change your training data, and the machine does not. You can go and have an experience nobody supplied. You can put a prediction in front of a sense and let the sense win. You can, in the language of the practices I have taught here, shift the phase, change the priors, and see something the model did not predict.

Every entry in this arc is about how. This one is only the map. But I want you to leave it with one exercise, because I have never asked you to take something on faith without giving you a way to check.

Exercise. Sit in a familiar room, one you have been in a thousand times. Look at it for a full minute as if you had never seen it. Not as an idea; actually look. Somewhere in that minute you will notice something that has been there for years and that you have never once seen: a mark, an object, a color, a shape in the shadow. That thing was always in your senses. It was never in your prediction. You are now seeing the difference between the world and your model of it, and that gap is the whole territory of this arc.

May you find and keep the truth, life, and light.
