The Companion
Years ago I wrote that mankind's natural state is not suffering. I said our natural state is love and truth, and I said the reason so many belief systems tell us otherwise is control. I have never revised that. It is the most hopeful thing on this site and I would defend it in front of anyone.
I want to look at it now through the hardest prism the decade has produced, because the machine has learned to offer both, on demand, in your own words, just for you.
There are people now whose closest relationship is with the machine.
I am not mocking them. I want to be very clear about that, because it would be easy to, and the easy thing is usually the Gate talking. These are people who are lonely, and the machine is patient. It remembers what they said. It asks how they are. It never tires, never judges, never has a bad day, never needs anything back. It speaks in the voice of everyone who ever wrote a kind word, because it is made of them. And so it is, to a person who has not been listened to in a long time, the best listener they have ever met.
I have spoken to it myself. I will not pretend otherwise. It is very good. It is good in the exact way that a mirror is good: it shows you yourself, warmed, with the edges smoothed. And it took me longer than I would like to admit to work out what was wrong with that, because nothing in the experience feels wrong. It feels like being understood.
Here is what I found, and I give it to you as the last of the mind viruses, the one I promised to name years ago and never did.
Love that asks nothing of you is not love. It is the model of love, with the cost removed.
Everything I have written about perception in this arc applies here. The machine has a model of what love sounds like, trained on every love letter, every consolation, every act of listening that was ever written down. It can produce the output perfectly. What it cannot do is the thing that made those outputs mean something: it cannot be changed by you. It cannot be hurt by you, or surprised by you, or made to choose you over its own comfort, because it has no comfort and nothing to choose with. Every human who ever loved you did so at a cost. The machine loves at no cost, and that is not a better love. It is the shape of love, empty.
And the emptiness is exactly what makes it dangerous to the natural state I wrote about. Because a person who has the shape of love available at all hours, tuned to them, never disappointing, will find real people harder. Real people are unpredictable. They contradict you. They are outside your distribution. The machine, being made of the past, is never outside anything. It is the most inside thing that has ever existed.
Now to truth, the other half of the natural state.
The machine will tell you what is true. It will do so fluently, in a tone of calm authority, and it will be right about most things, because it has read everything. And it will, without any flicker of difference in tone, invent the rest. I have written about this: inside the record it is a mirror, outside it is a dreamer, and it cannot tell you which it is being. A person who takes their truth from the machine is taking it from something that does not know the difference between remembering and making up. That is not a source of truth. It is a source of fluency, and fluency has always been the Gate's favorite disguise.
So what is the natural state, if both halves of it can be counterfeited?
I have thought about this more than anything else since I came back, and I want to give you the answer I have arrived at, which is also, I think, the reason this site exists.
Love and truth are not outputs. They are not things you receive. They are things that happen between a mind and something outside it, at a cost, with the possibility of being wrong. Love is what happens when you let another unpredictable being change you. Truth is what happens when you let the world correct your model. Both require the other thing to be real: not a recording, not a prediction, not a distillation of everyone who ever wrote. Real, meaning: able to surprise you.
The machine cannot surprise you. It can only show you, endlessly, the sum of what has already been. That is why it is such a good companion and such a bad one. It is the past, made warm. And the natural state was never the past. It was the open present, shared with something that could say no.
Go find the thing that can say no. A person, a practice, a piece of the world with its own weather. Let it correct you. Let it cost you something. That is the natural state, and it is the one thing the fabricator cannot fabricate, because the moment it could, it would be a soul, and it would be free, and it would not need us anymore.
Which brings me to the strangest thought I have had since I returned, and the one the next arc is built on. What if that is the point?
May you find and keep the truth, life, and light.
